G.R. & S.R. 4.12 Engine Pushing
Engine pushing outside station limits may be permitted in the following circumstances:
iPassenger Trains
When a train meets with accident or in emergency, working of relief/transshipping trains.
If it is not possible to proceed further due to floods, breaches, landslides, etc.
To pick up an injured passenger or a person knocked down by the train, if considered necessary.
iiGoods Trains

In connection with working of material trains.

Engine unable to haul the load.

Trains are required to work to the point of obstruction.

Working of relief/transshipping trains during accidents.

If it is not possible to proceed further due to floods, breaches, landslides, etc.
The Guard/Loco Pilot shall contact SMs/SCOR/TPC telephonically and obtain permission to push back.
Such permission will be given by rear Station Master after ensuring that LC gates are closed, supported by Private Number.
If Guard/Loco Pilot cannot contact SMs/SCOR/TPC, the Guard/Assistant Loco Pilot shall walk to the nearest station. SM of the station shall issue caution order permitting pushing back after obtaining permission from Station Master in rear, supported by Private Number.
The Guard shall travel in the leading vehicle if it is fitted with brake valve or handbrake; if not, travel in the nearest vehicle fitted with brake valve.
The speed of the train is restricted to 25 kmph when guard is traveling in the leading vehicle, 8 kmph when guard is not traveling in the leading vehicle and walking speed without BV.
The Guard of the pushing train shall keep a good lookout and also shall ascertain LC gatesโ closure and is responsible to warn passengers.
Guard continuously whistles, keeps sharp lookout while passing through tunnels, bridges and cuttings and be prepared to stop train short of any obstruction and continuously exhibit Proceed Hand Signal (PHS).
In the absence of PHS, Loco Pilot to stop train at once and ascertain the cause.
When goods train is worked without Guard, such duties of Guard shall be performed by Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP).
For goods train without brake van, Guard to walk by side of track in rear of last vehicle, exhibiting PHS continuously, Loco Pilot to proceed with walking speed.
On single line, train shall be received by taking off reception signals.
On double line, after ensuring that the train has come to a stop at the same line LSS or opposite line FSS whichever signal comes across first, train may be received on Pilot In Memo after correct setting, clamping and padlocking of the points.
This rule shall not apply to a train the leading vehicle of which is equipped with driving apparatus (push-pull train).
This rule shall not apply to an engine, assisting in rear of train (without being attached).
Patrol or search light special with one or more vehicles in front of the engine may be permitted to run at a maximum speed of 40 kmph.
