DETONATING SIGNALS = Detonators or Fog signals

Fog Signal (Detonator): (G.R/S.R 3.59 to 3.64)

  • It is an audible signal used to attract the attention of the Loco Pilot.

  • The detonator consists of a metal disc charged with explosive and capable of being fixed on the rail head by means of metal clasps.

  • For use, a detonator shall be placed on the center of the head of the rail with the label upwards and shall be securely fastened to the rail by bending the clasps.

  • When an engine or vehicle passes over it, it explodes with a loud sound so as to attract the attention of the Loco Pilot.

  • A case containing ten detonators shall be supplied to Loco Pilot, Guard, Gang mate, Gatemen, patrol men, Trolly/lorry, TT machine operator, Loco Pilot of Tower car. 20 detonators to fog signal men and 8 for key man.

  • The normal life of detonator manufactured in 2010 and thereafter is 5 years.

  • Life can be extended by one year each time after testing, to a maximum of 3 extensions.

  • Detonators shall be tested once in 12 months.

  • Detonator shall be tested under an empty wagon moving at 8 to 11 Kmph.

  • In thick and foggy weather, to indicate the Loco Pilot about the location of signals, two detonators shall be placed at a distance of 270 m from First Stop signal, 10 meters apart.

  • In case of obstruction, one detonator shall be placed at a distance of 600 m, and three detonators at 1200 m, 10 m apart from obstruction.

  • A safety radius of 45 meters should be maintained during explosion.

  • Detonators shall be carefully handled and they shall be stored in a dry place.

  • Such staff that is expected to use detonators should be tested once in three months.

  • A register is maintained in SM office (consists of four parts).

  • All particulars of usage of detonators etc. to be recorded by ―ON Duty‖ SM.

SR 3.70.3 Where Departure Signal Got Stuck Up in “OFF” Position at an Advance Station

  • SM shall attempt to put it back ―ON‖ by operating a panel and immediately report to S&T staff.

  • If unable to do so, inform rear SM, SCOR.

  • Make an entry in S&T failure register.

  • Light of the signal shall be extinguished by pasting paper on the glass or putting across mark.

  • A competent railway servant shall be deputed to exhibit Stop hand signals at the foot of the stuck ―OFF‖ signal till it is brought back to ―ON‖.

  • SM shall try to receive the train on other line as far as possible.

  • In case it is not possible, then SM of advance station shall advise rear SM to intimate LP the fact through issuing caution order.

  • Train at advance station shall be admitted by indirect reception after conveying message to LP.
